Mendeley allow attaching PDF files to references, reading as well as annotating them. PDF can be added manually or generated/suggested by Mendeley.

  1. Click on the record in your library, scroll down the Info pane on the right until you reach the Files field, and click on Add Files.
  2. Locate the PDF where you have saved it on your computer, and click Open to add it.

In some cases, when a PDF is retrieved by Mendeley, it can be downloaded by clicking on the file icon at the right side of a record.

Annotate a PDF file

Read

To open up a PDF document in Mendeley, double-click on a reference that is linked to a PDF. or click on the reference once, then click on Read in the Info pane on the right.

Highlight

To highlight or annotate in your PDF document, click on the icons in the toolbar and select the desired text. You can highlight in several colors.

Annotate

Click on the Note icon in the toolbar, then click on the spot within the PDF, and type your note. You can use notes in different colors, and you can read them in the Annotations section on the right.

Adding Notes to a Reference

If you want to add critical appraisal notes, annotations, date of access, and others relevant information to a reference:

  1. Select the reference and go to the Annotations tab in the pane on the right.
  2. Type in your notes. They are automatically saved.
  3. To annotate the PDF, click on the icon on the right of the entry. The PDF will open, as well as the Notebook and Annotations tab.

If you have added sticky notes within the PDF, you can also see them here. You can click on the PDF notes to navigate to the relevant sections in the PDF.
